Advent 2020: It Happened Anyway
Welcome to the season of Advent! There’s no way around it…Christmas is going to feel different this year.
With travel restrictions, limited gatherings, and social distancing, it might be hard to imagine Christmas happening at all. But the birth of Jesus didn’t happen like anyone had planned either. Mary was an unmarried, pregnant peasant woman traveling to an unfamiliar town with no available rooms. Still, the first Christmas happened anyway! And it will happen for us, too.
This unconventional Advent season will draw us deeper into the true meaning of Christmas: that no matter what, God always finds a way to show up!
Here’s how we’re celebrating this year…
December Daily Devotionals (Nov. 30-Dec. 24)
Beginning Nov. 30 through Christmas Eve, Grant Glowiak will be sharing short daily devotionals focused on our theme of Hope. You can watch the videos on YouTube, Facebook, or Instagram. (Make sure you’re following Union Church on social!)
The Longest Night Service – “God With Us” (Dec. 21 @ 7pm)
Even during a typical holiday season, Christmas can be hard! For people who are lonely, grieving, dealing with family conflict, or struggling for any other reason, the pressure to feel holiday cheer this time of year can be overwhelming.
This service is for those who might find it painful to think about participating in the usual joyful holiday services when the rest of life feels so far from joyful right now. It’s also for those who enjoy the celebratory Christmas services but still desire a place where the loss and loneliness of this year can also be honored.
This service won’t have a sermon but will include prayer, music, liturgy, and candle lighting. Victoria Wick will host this service on Zoom – it will not be live-streamed. And because it can be intimidating to join a Zoom service, people are always welcome to keep their video off and change their display name for anonymity. Mark your calendars, and stay tuned for more details on how to join us for this special service.
Christmas Pageant (Dec. 24 @ 4pm)
This year, we will have our first ever virtual Christmas Pageant over Zoom! If you and your family would like to be involved in this very special event, please contact Penny Johnson. More details coming soon!
In-Person Outdoor Service for Kids (Dec. 24 @ 6pm)
Traditional Lesson & Carols (Dec. 24 @ 8pm and 11pm)
Join Pastor Mike for a traditional service presented in an untraditional way! Our Christmas Eve sermon, complete with carols, will be streamed on YouTube at 8pm on Dec. 24. We will re-stream the service at 11pm for those who are unable to attend 8pm.
