A Wrinkle in Time: Lent at Union
This Lenten season, join us in exploring Madeleine L’Engle’s beloved and award-winning 1963 novel and its themes of beauty, belonging, freedom, and the power of love.
2/11: Family Pre-Lent event, 4:30-6:30pm
Families are encouraged to join us for a pancake supper (in advance of Mardi Gras, or Shrove Tuesday) and an introduction both to Lent and A Wrinkle in Time, a middle grade novel that is at once about faith and science, that takes place mostly in outer space.
Our activities will be inspired by both A Wrinkle in Time and its exploration of stars, and the words of Katherine Paterson, another great American children’s book author:
A friend gave me a copy of a small magazine which her husband was editing. On the back of the magazine was a dramatic photo of Supernova remnant Cassiopeia A and under the picture this quotation:
‘When the Chandra telescope took its first image in August of this year, it caught not just another star in the heavens, but a foundry distributing its wares to the rest of the galaxy.
‘Silicon, sulfur, argon, calcium, and iron were among the elements identified from Chandra’s X-ray image. “These are the materials we are made of,” said the project scientist.’
The thrill that every writer recognizes went through my body. I knew I had a idea for a book in that quotation. What would it mean to a child that the world has discarded as waste material to learn that she is made of the same stuff as the stars?
Come for a night of pancakes and star-making, as we find our place in this Lenten season. RSVPs are appreciated, but not required: contact Penny Johnson at firstname.lastname@example.org.
2/14: Ash Wednesday Service 7:00pm
Christians traditionally enter the Lenten season marked by ashes, an act echoing the words of Genesis: for dust you are, and to dust you will return. This year, join us as we consider our shared humanity and the ways we touch the transcendent: the ways in which we are created of dust and stars, given life through the presence of God.
Sundays: 9:07 and 10:00am Worship
Each Sunday in worship, we attend to the words of Scripture, L’Engle’s narrative, and the wisdom they speak to our lives.
Wednesdays: 5:30-6:45pm Wrinkled Time: Soup and Lenten Spirituality
Christians often speak of time in two ways: chronos, or chronological, measured time; and kairos, which is… different. God’s time, the opportune time. The moment into which God enters.
Each Wednesday evening, join us for a bit of set-apart time. Time to eat homemade soup and reflect. Improvised piano music fills the space, biblical poetry prompts journaling, narrative prompts spur doodling, and creative prayer practices suggest new ways of knowing God. All ages are welcome, with particular practices intended for children. Contact Bromleigh McCleneghan at email@example.com for more information.
