Mission Ministry Volunteer Opportunities

A Just Harvest

https://ajustharvest.org ,founded in 1983, aims to reduce hunger in Rogers Park and the greater Chicago community by providing nutritious meals daily while building a just society to promote the well-being of the patrons served. Meals are served to the hungry every day of the year.

Volunteer opportunities 

  1. In the week before volunteers go to A Just Harvest, purchase food to supply a meal. Time commitment: 1-2 hoursThis is a great task for an individual, a couple or a family (even with smaller children).
  2. 3-5 people meet at the church, pick up the purchased food and drive to A Just Harvest where they assist with the serving and cleaning up of the meal. Time commitment: 4-5 hours door to door. The address is 7653 North Paulina Chicago. This is a great outing for individuals, couples or a Simple Supper or other small group. Volunteers must be at least 12 years of age; substantial standing required.

The Night Ministry

The Night Ministry, https://www.thenightministry.org, founded in 1976, was created out of diverse religious traditions to build relationships with the vulnerable youth and adults on Chicago’s nighttime streets. They provide basic supplies, meals, self-care supplies, free healthcare, housing and supportive services for youth, and referrals to other resources.

Volunteer opportunities

  1. 1-3 or 4 people purchase supplies for 130+ sack suppers. Time commitment: 1-2 hours. This is a great task for an individual, a couple or a family (even with smaller children).
  2. 2-5 or 6 people make 130+ sandwiches and stuff paper bags with sack supper contents. Time commitment: 1-2 hours. This is a wonderful project for individuals, one or two families or another small group. Can be done at the church. No age restrictions except adults should make sandwiches.
  3. 1-2 people deliver Sack Suppers to The Night Ministry offices in downtown Chicago at 1020 West Bryn Mawr Ave. Time commitment: 2-3 hours (depending upon traffic).

DuPage Pads

DUPAGEPADS, https://dupagepads.org, founded in 1985, seeks to end homelessness in DuPage County. It provides of interim and permanent housing, coupled with support services in order to help individuals work toward becoming self-sufficient. PADs runs overnight shelters in local churches.

Volunteer opportunities

Union church will be providing all the volunteer services, which include making and serving a meal, preparing beds and cleaning up, from late afternoon on June 6, 2020 to around noon on June 7, 2020 for the PADs overnight shelter at Redeemer Lutheran Church in Hinsdale. 15-25+ volunteers will be needed for 1, 2 and 3+ hour shifts.

The Boulevard

The Boulevard, http://www.blvd.org, founded in 1994, provides residential care for homeless men and women in medical recovery. This 64-bed center on Chicago’s West Side offers interim housing and support to ill and injured homeless adults who would otherwise lack a stable and safe place to heal. It is the only agency of its kind in Chicago. Union Church does supply and clothing drives for The Boulevard each year.

Volunteer Opportunities

4-6 people needed to prepare and serve a meal to The Boulevard residents. Time commitment: 4-5 hours door to door. This is a fabulous opportunity for a few people to participate in The Boulevard’s Share-A-Meal program with the very appreciative residents. Volunteers should be 14 years of age or older. Some standing required. Further details will be provided prior to the Share A Meal. The address is 3456 West Franklin St. Chicago.

HCS Family Services

HCS Family Services, https://www.hcsfamilyservices.org founded in 1937, provides emergency and interim assistance, a food pantry, counseling, and education to help vulnerable families and individuals in the area. Union church does a food drive for HCS, usually in September.

San Lucas Church

San Lucas Church UCC is a small mission church located in Humboldt Park in Chicago. It provides much needed services to the community including a weekly meal, emergency food and clothing and counseling.

Volunteer Opportunities

2-4 people needed to assist with serving a pre-Thanksgiving meal on the afternoon of the Tuesday before Thanksgiving at San Lucas. Time commitment: 4-5 hours door to door (depending upon traffic). Volunteers should be 14 years of age or older. Some standing required.  Details will be provided prior to the event.

Union Church Soup Ministry

Union Church Soup Ministry is an independent group that meets in the church kitchen each Monday morning to prepare soup for the San Lucas soup kitchen. The meal is delivered on Tuesday morning. Contact Craig Schaefer at chschaefer46@gmail.com for more information.
